PA: Judge grants work release for ex-guard who sexually assaulted Northampton County inmate

A Northampton County judge sentenced a former county prison guard to jail Wednesday for sexually assaulting a female inmate, but also granted the man immediate work release.

Kelvin Myers, 41, of Forks Township, previously pleaded guilty to institutional sexual assault and was in court Wednesday for his sentencing in the case.

Judge Murray sentenced Myers to four months to 18 months in county prison. Under the institutional sexual assault charge, Myers must register as a sex offender for 15 years under Pennsylvania’s version of Megan’s Law.

“This is a sad case. Sad for the victim. Sad for the institutions we uphold here in Northampton County. It’s really sad for your faSamuel mily, Mr. Myers … and it’s sad for you,” the judge said.

Kelvin Myers would not be eligible for work release under Northampton County Prison’s policy, but because he worked for the county prison and the crime occurred there, Myers will serve his sentence in Monroe County.

The judge said he was granting work release in part because of Myers’ lack of a prior criminal record, his excellent work history, and his need to support his wife and four kids.

The two tiered double stnadard justice system in the US has gotten blatantly outrageous. What can be done?

This was the county of my conviction. The prison is a dump. But I have to say though that the guards in my pod (protective custody) were very respectful and professional towards us even knowing what we were accused or convicted of. I have to give them that much credit. While I was on bail the director of pre-trial services at that time was extremely professional and even caring.

What about the average person’s need to support their families? What about their need to find a good job? What about their need to have decent housing free of BS restrictions?
There are a lot of people on the registry for a first time offense who did something less than this guy but they weren’t afforded the same favoritism.
